In the first chapter, the author states that there are more people enslaved today in the 21st century than during the peak of the atlantic slave trade. Did this shock you? Why do you think today's slavery isn't treated with the same gravity?

On page 10 in Half The Sky, I was very shocked that there are more people enslaved today than during the Atlantic slave trade. Especially since we worked so hard on full emancipation, its sad to hear that there is still cases of slavery that occur more frequently than when it was legal. I feel that today's slavery isn't treated with same same gravity as in the 1780s. People aren't seeing this type of containment as a growing form of slavery and instead label it as "sex trafficking". This is sort of like when we talked about female circumcision and some people labeled it as "genital mutilation". People give less harsher names to things so that they aren't seen as something that it so tremendous. Another thing that really surprised me is how people, like Meena, were basically manipulated with their children to stay. The brothels don't make it a necessity for their costumers to use protection, with the hope that their women will get pregnant. Then they can take their children to either work as sex slaves there, if you're a girl or if you're a boy to do household things like laundry. Also as I was reading, it shocked me that the head of the brothel Meena was in was a women. You would think that women would be less harsh and more understandable with helping out our fellow females, and instead it was the complete opposite.
